School Meal Information

At Moon Area School District, we know that good nutrition and learning go hand in hand! The Moon Area Food Service staff strives each day to provide delicious, nutritious meals for our students.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.  All snacks are "Smart Snack" approved according to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 guidelines.

Federal nutrition standards govern our school meals as follows:

  • Age-appropriate calorie limits
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (Students must take at least 1⁄2 cup of fruits or vegetables to count toward the meal price)
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green, red/orange and legumes
  • Fatā€free or 1% milk (Flavored milk must be fat-free)
  • More whole grains
  • Less sodium

The Moon Area Food Services Department is comprised of professionally certified Food Handler and Food Protection Managers.

Breakfast for ALL Students

The Governor's initiative for all schools that participate in the School Breakfast Program is to provide free breakfast for all enrolled students during the 2023-2024 school year. In addition, students who qualify for reduced priced meals will not be charged for their lunch during the 2023-2024 school year.

In the event of a two-hour delay, Moon Area School District will serve breakfast for all students when they arrive at school. Questions? Please contact Christie Leininger, Food Service Director. 412-264-9440 X1129 or cleininger@moonarea.net.
